Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) or Poly (p-Phenylene sulfide) (PPS) is a polymer made up of alternating sulfur atoms and phenylene rings in a para-substitution pattern. The highly stable chemical bonds of its molecular structure provide a remarkable degree of molecular stability toward both thermal degradation and chemical resistance. The molecular structure also readily packs into a very thermally stable crystalline lattice, hence PPS is a semi-crystalline polymer with a high crystalline melting point of about 285°C (545°F). Because of its molecular structure, PPS also tends to char during combustion, making the material inherently flame retardant. There are no known-solvents that would attack or dissolve PPS at temperatures below 200°C (392°F).

PPS Polymer

Thermal Stability

A remarkable combination of both long-term resistance to temperatures up to 200°C (392°F) and short-term resistance to temperatures up to 260°C (500° F)

Dimensional Stability

Even complex parts could be molded with very tight tolerances and will maintain dimensional stability at elevated temperatures and and in harsh chemical environment

Chemical Resistance

Resistant to a wide variety of solvents and corrosive chemicals at elevated temperatures

Inherent Flame Retardancy

All PPS compounds have UL94 V-0 flammability ratings without flame retardant additives

Applications

This remarkable polymer contains a unique balance of excellent properties to bring you various innovations for diverse applications. Through our relationship with our suppliers we bring you this polymer in many engineered compounds suitable for demanding conditions of temperature, load, and chemicals.

Automotive Technology

PPS is an ideal material for automotive parts exposed to high temperatures, automotive fluids, or mechanical stress. PPS is a lighter weight alternative to metals resisting corrosion by salts and fluids. The ability to mold complex parts to very tight tolerances and insert-molding capabilities accommodate multiple-component integration.
